With a focus on improving understanding and dialogue between the people of the US and the people of Germany, the American Academy was established in Berlin in 1994. The reason for choosing Berlin was that its unique social, political, cultural and historical links with the United States should be maintained.
Beside residential fellowships that are offered to American scholars, policymakers, artists and writers at the Hans Arnhold Center, which belongs to the American Academy, it also brings leading Americans to Berlin for short visits. On the one hand, the offered fellowships permit their participants to pursue their work in a manner that should encourage participation to the vivid life in Berlin and Germany. On the other hand the invitation of leading Americans should facilitate an exchange of people's (of Germany and the United States) views.
